FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Georgian recognized for national industry leadership
Atlanta, April 24, 2006 During the just-concluded legislative session, both houses of the Georgia General Assembly recognized M. Bryan Freeman for his nearly 20 years of leadership in the life settlement industry.
A life settlement is the sale to a third party of an existing life insurance policy for more than its cash surrender value but less than its net death benefit. Such transactions are usually undertaken for the purposes of estate- or financial planning.
As noted in House Resolution 1649, introduced by Representatives Karla Drenner, Pat Gardner and Kathy Ashe, Freeman, a Georgia native, conducted his first life settlement in 1989, at the request of a friend grappling with terminal illness. This makes him one of the first people internationally to have conducted such a transaction.
Soon thereafter, Freeman transformed his independent insurance agency so that it focused almost exclusively on work as a life settlement broker. He later sold that firm and started Atlanta-based Habersham Funding, LLC, a life settlement provider (purchaser), of which he continues to serve as president.
Among other accomplishments, the House Resolution recognizes that Freeman has long been involved in his industry’s oldest and largest trade association, the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA). He is currently serving an unprecedented fourth term as president of the board of LISA.
“Bryan has come to be regarded as an international authority on life settlements and has spoken to many audiences on the topic,” says Doug Head, executive director of LISA. “He has chaired a number of industry conferences and is a sought-after expert witness on life settlement topics. Most importantly, Bryan is respected for his integrity, leadership and vision.”
Senate Resolution 1250, introduced by Horacena Tate, in whose district Freeman resides, also lauds him as, “a tireless advocate for the still emerging life settlement field.”
Freeman will chair his last international meeting for LISA the organization’s 12th annual spring meeting May 3-5 in New York City.
